Write Value Propositions That Actually Convert

Build your first Value Proposition Agent

Writing a great value proposition shouldn’t be this hard.

But it is.

Even the best marketers freeze when they sit down to explain why their product or service matters.

Too vague, and it sounds like every competitor. Too detailed, and you lose the story. Too clever, and you confuse the buyer.

The result? Hours spent wordsmithing sentences that still don’t land.

That’s why creating an Agent to write value propositions is a game-changer. Not because it replaces your creativity, but because it gives you structure, clarity, and speed.

In today’s article, I’ll walk you through:

  • How to build a Value Proposition Agent (we’ll use Open AI’s Custom GPTs to build one)
  • What results to expect
  • What to watch out for

Let’s get to it.

How To Build an Agent for Value Propositions

Building an agent can seem like a daunting task.

The good news? It isn’t.

The good news? It’s simple.

You don’t need to code, fine tune models, or hire a prompt engineer.  All you need is natural language and the instructions below.

The one catch: you’ll need a paid ChatGPT Plus or Team account to build your own.

Step 1: Create the Custom GPT

Go to ChatGPT.  On the left side panel, look for GPTs.

Go to Explore → Which will open up a GPT store → Create a GPT (top right corner)

If you choose the “Configure” options, here is what it will look like.

Step 1: Create the Custom GPT
Step 1: Create the Custom GPT

There are 5 sections that we will need to fill out (it should take no more than 5 – 10 mins)

Here is what it will look like when you are done.

Creating the Custom GPT Step-by-Step
Creating the Custom GPT Step-by-Step

Let’s walk through each section at a time

Step 2: Name Your GPT (section 1)

Lets start with something simple.

I named my Agent – “Generate Value Proposition” in Section 1 above.

You can name it whatever you like.

You can also add:

  • An image (optional)
  • A short description (e.g., “Turns raw inputs into crisp, differentiated VPs.”)

Step 2: Add Your Instructions (section 2)

This is the heart of your GPT. The instructions tell it what to do and what not to do.

I use my 5 Keys Framework because it consistently produces high-quality, actionable responses.

Here are the instructions I used for my Value Proposition GPT.

“Role:

You are the most experienced person when it comes to marketing great products.  Act like an expert in generating value propositions.  When you respond, your tone is warm, friendly, smart, and direct to the point.

Input:

Please ask these questions before you proceed:

Users: Who is the user? One user at a time.

Product: Brief description of your product

User Benefit: How will the user benefit from your product?

Value / Uniqueness: What is your value proposition? What makes your product unique?

Key Features: List the key features of your product that your users will value / benefit from.

Instructions:

Please generate a value proposition for the product based on the above inputs.

Please create two artifacts,

First a value proposition summary first. Summary should be brief, concise, and direct to the point..

Second, a value proposition snippet. It should be catchy and pull the audience in. Always include an emoji to make it fun.

Provide 3 options for each of the above artifacts.

Format:

Value Proposition: [Brief summary of the products value proposition, only 1 paragraph and no more than 3 – 4 lines]

Snippet: [Snippet description, it should be only be 140 characters long]

Good Examples:

Value Proposition: Revolutionize your home buying journey with our streamlined digital mortgage experience. Receive conditional offers in just 3 days, thanks to our Virtual Mortgage Assistant, AI-Powered Eligibility Check, and Automated Rate features. We’ve cut application time from 20 days to 3, making your dream home closer than ever.

Snippet: Unlock your dream home faster! Get personalized mortgage offers in 3 days with our AI-guided, user-friendly experience. Homeownership made easy! 🚀”

Step 3: Add Conversation Starters (section 3)

Conversation starters are basically instructions for the users. They guide users toward successful interactions.

You can pretty much type anything you want here.

I prefer to keep it simple – “Start Here >”

Step 4: Add Background Context (section 4)

This is your chance to preload documents or examples the GPT should reference during conversations.

For a Value Proposition GPT, I would recommend:

  • Company-wide strategic themes – for alignment
  • Brand voice – for consistency
  • VP best practices – to raise quality

Since my GPT is company and industry agnostic, I have only uploaded best practices.

Step 5: Set Model and Capabilities (section 5)

Next, you select the model and add internal tools.

For the models, you can choose:

  • No recommended model – user will use the model they prefer
  • GPT-4o
  • GPT-5, and
  • GPT-5 Thinking

For this GPT, I choose the latest GPT-5 model in section 5

As for internal tools, you can include:

  • Web Search
  • Canvas (for writing and coding)
  • Image Generation
  • Code Interpreter and Data Analysis

This setting lets you determine which of these tools your GPT can access. For this one, I just left it all blank.  No need to overcomplicate things.

Step 6: Save Your GPT

On the top right (not in the above image) you hit “Create” and you’re ready.

That’s it. Easy, peasy.

Let’s Run the GPT

Once your GPT is set up, hit Start.

It’ll ask clarifying questions to understand the context, guide your thinking, and create 3 value proposition options.

Here’s an example input I gave it:

“Users: First time home buyer
Product: Design a streamline digital experience of applying for a home mortgage.
User Benefit: Customers get conditional offers at the end of the application process. Easy and simple to use digital experience. And should minimize input for the existing customers
Value / Uniqueness: Reduce application time from 20 days to 3
Key Features: Feature #1 Virtual Mortgage Assistant. Feature #2 AI-Powered Eligibility Check. Feature #3 Automated Rate. “

And here is what it returned.

The Custom GPT

Not bad for a first best draft. You can see the full response here.

Here’s My Agent

If you ran into any problems, feel free to use mine.

It’s completely free to use, and you don’t need a paid account to use it.

My Value Proposition GPT.

Final Thoughts

A few things to keep in mind.

  • Use your judgment: LLMs generate options, not decisions. Review and refine your value proposition before you finalize.
  • Don’t trust placeholder numbers: LLMs hallucinate, so if it throws numbers at you (unless you entered them) don’t trust them. Use them as placeholders, and then insert real data.
  • Be mindful of background files: Too much context can constrain creativity. Remove them if you want fresh thinking

Better value propositions mean sharper positioning, clearer launches, and more confident selling. Build the right GPT, and it becomes your team’s most valuable message multiplier.
